Does a Netflix-approved camera actually matter?

Is a camera being on the Netflix approved list worth anything to a student or to clients?

Asked on Reddit,

Not for the work most people do. The list applies to productions Netflix commissions, and the thread quoted cinematographer John Brawley, ASC saying Netflix cares whether a film is good rather than which camera shot it. Every reply that addressed clients said they do not ask, and one advised ignoring the list entirely.

What the list is actually for

The thread's position was that the approved-camera list governs originals Netflix finances, and nothing else. A comment quoted the cinematographer John Brawley, ASC, from a Blackmagic forum discussion, to the effect that Netflix buys films all the time that were not shot on approved cameras, and that anyone choosing a camera to impress them is focused on the wrong detail. Another reply pointed out that the camera which has dominated the cinematography Oscar for over a decade was itself not on the list for originals.

What a cinema body does give you

The replies were much more interested in this than in the badge, and this is the part that survives whichever models are current.

  • Internal ND filters, which is the difference between changing exposure in seconds and unscrewing glass on location.
  • Timecode, which matters the moment there is a second camera or separate sound.
  • A body built to run for long takes without stopping to cool down — the original reason the question was asked.
  • A Super 35 sensor that takes cine glass, and codecs meant for grading rather than for delivery.
  • Familiarity with a cinema layout rather than a stills camera adapted into one.

Why the thread still said not to buy that particular camera

  • Age. Several replies noted the body in question is over a decade old and that plenty of current cameras do not have the fault being escaped.
  • Colour. One comment collected criticism of its skin tones and greens from people who had graded hundreds of hours of the footage.
  • Better options exist at the same money, and two replies named alternatives in the same bracket.

The specific models in that thread will date quickly, and were already dating when it was written. The two things that will not are that internal NDs and timecode change how a day runs, and that no client has ever asked which list a camera is on.
